Stud bolt description

A stud bolt is a threaded rod or bar with threads on both ends, typically used with two nuts to create a bolted joint. Unlike regular bolts that have a head on one end, stud bolts are fully threaded or have threaded portions on each end with a smooth shank in the middle.

Stud bolts are commonly used in applications where access to one side of the joint is limited or impossible, making it impractical to insert a headed bolt from one side. They’re particularly useful in flange connections, such as those found in piping systems, pressure vessels, and heavy machinery where components need to be assembled from one side only.

The installation process involves threading one end of the stud bolt into a tapped hole in one component, then placing the second component over the protruding threaded end and securing it with a nut and washer. This creates a strong, reliable connection that can be easily disassembled when needed.

Stud bolts are available in various configurations including fully threaded rods, double-end studs with different thread pitches on each end, and tap-end studs where one end is designed to thread into a tapped hole while the other accepts a nut. They’re manufactured in different materials and grades depending on the application requirements, from standard carbon steel to high-strength alloy steels and corrosion-resistant materials for harsh environments.
