Nail-type drywall anchor

A nail-type drywall anchor is a hollow wall fastener designed to secure items to drywall where there’s no wall stud for support. These anchors consist of a plastic or metal sleeve with an integrated nail or pin that drives through the anchor body to create the holding mechanism.

The installation process is straightforward: you drill a pilot hole in the drywall, insert the anchor flush with the wall surface, then drive the nail through the center of the anchor using a hammer. As the nail penetrates, it causes the back portion of the anchor to expand or deform behind the drywall, creating a secure grip that prevents pullout.

These anchors are ideal for lightweight to medium-duty applications such as hanging pictures, mirrors, small shelves, or decorative items. They typically have weight ratings ranging from 20 to 75 pounds depending on the size and material of the anchor. The nail head usually sits flush with or slightly below the anchor face, providing a clean appearance.

Nail-type drywall anchors offer several advantages: they’re quick to install without requiring screws, they’re relatively inexpensive, and they work well in standard 1/2-inch to 5/8-inch drywall. However, they’re generally considered permanent installations since removing them often damages the drywall. They’re also not suitable for heavy loads or applications subject to vibration, where screw-type anchors or toggle bolts would be more appropriate.
